The Scorpion Home Install Package™ was designed to fit the needs of so many operators that are stuck in the confines of an HOA, better know as: Home Owners Association.
The Scorpion line of antennas can be mounted either on the ground with wire radials or elevated using our Scorpion Stinger Antennas™
When mounted on a tripod, our adjustable Scorpion Stinger Antennas™ become an elevated counterpoise better known as a true ground plane. We isolate the main antenna and the Scorpion Stinger Counterpoise Antennas™ from the tripod by means of the Scorpion Insulating Bushing™ made of Delrin®. The bushing is installed at the base of the main antenna mount. This can be illustrated as the main antenna being one side of a vertical dipole and the Scorpion Stinger Antennas™ become the other side of a vertical dipole. Vertical dipole…lower take off angle….better for DX!
Once you elevate ground radials, they have to be resonant on the band you wish to operate. We do this with the Scorpion Stinger Adjustable Antennas™ used as counterpoises that can be adjusted to a very low SWR on all of your favorite bands. See our install instruction manual on tuning.
Note: For ground installs, you are far better off to install 30 ground radials that are 20 ft long than to install 15 ground radials at 40 feet. You are trying to build a reflective screen or counterpoise with the radials. If you elevate them, you get rid of a lot of ground loss, but now they need to be resonant for the frequency of operation.
A counterpoise screen using chicken wire or close mesh varmint screen will work, the bigger the screen the better the signal. The screen of choice can be buried or just laid down so the grass will grow between it so nothing is seen but the Scorpion Antenna.
Our customers with motor homes and travel trailers use the tripod mount for ease of setup and break down while traveling the back roads of our great country. Using the Stainless Steel quick disconnects with our Scorpion Stinger Antennas™ and a tripod, antenna setup time can be as little as five minutes.
The Ameritron© model SDC-102 is an antenna controller that sports 10 memory presets with full manual jog control. The SDC-102 sends a 5 volt signal to the reed switch mounted in our antenna, “brown and white wires on connector plug.” We have installed two magnets on our motor coupling that will trigger the reed switch to send a 5 volt signal back to the SDC-102 that can be seen as a count change on the digital display. We use 16 threads per inch Stainless allthread so each digit count equals 1/32 of an inch of antenna coil travel. Two digit counts equal 1/16 of an inch of antenna coil travel.
For our customers that own an Icom-7000…. The Better RF Company® has a state of the art fully automatic antenna controller that will make tuning a snap.
For our customers that want fully automatic antenna tuning at a push of a button the Turbo Tuner® is the way to go.
We have tested all of these controllers on our antennas and highly recommended them to all of our customers.
We have also tested and use the MFJ© tripod model MFJ-1919© at all trade shows and swap meets that we attend. For a price of $89.00, this tripod is a true value.
Each of the Scorpion home install packages are supplied with the following:

1 - Counterpoise Adaptor Ring™ for The Scorpion Stinger Antennas™ to mount to.
1 - Antenna insulating bushing…. isolates antenna from tripod and ground.
1 - Antenna mast clamp… this keeps antennas from rotating in tripod.
1 - RF choke for antenna coax consisting of ten large beads of #31 type material installed on an 18 inch piece of Belden© 9913 coax with PL-259 connectors installed.
Note: The #31 type material beads offer the highest impedance available for common mode currents on the HF bands.
During high power use these beads will become warm. We don’t install the beads in PVC pipe or contain them in shrink tubing. We want to dissipate the heat generated into open atmosphere, not contain it.
1 – A basic antenna kit that is supplied with our antennas includes: Scorpion antenna controller, 12 volt fused power adaptor, "50 feet of antenna control cable Home Package only", # 31 type material clamp on choke for antenna control cable, four pin quick connect plug for antenna control cable and a shunt coil for impedance matching.
Customer supplies the mast or tripod of his choice.
