Scorpion Classic

The Scorpion Classic.

Here is our latest antenna designed for those who like that trek down nostalgia lane. This antenna brings back fond memories of the day of Chrome and Black leather from the time of the 57 Chevy and boulevard cruisers. This hand polished Stainless Steel tube has a luster that is so impressive that everyone at the Visalia convention asked: "is that antenna Chrome"? The Tin plated 10 gauge copper wire really stands out against the special black phenolic.

This Antenna not only looks sharp, it's 3 inch coil will put a sting in your signal that will
surprise your contacts. Please contact us direct for more information.

Black Widow Retracted

The Black Widow finish is available on all of our standard antennas. Additional cost: $70.00

The Black Widow is our powder coated model. All of antennas are available in the Black Widow format. As far as paint goes, nothing will last longer or is more durable than powder coating. Every motorcycle manufacture in the world uses it on the frames of there motorcycles. The Lexan coil cover sports a high dollar automotive plastic bumper paint that requires a three step process to apply.

The black Lexan coil cover not only looks good, it now has excellent protection from the sun. The Black Widow might fill the bill for some of the Para Military guys that want that stealth look or just like the looks of this Black Beauty on there rig. Here are two comparison photos between the Scorpion Classic and the Scorpion Black Widow on a black truck that belongs to Bob Hughes W7SNR.

All of our antennas are supplied with a 6 foot whip, 20 feet of antenna control cable, antenna control box, snap together type 31 material choke for the antenna control cable and a cigarette lighter plug with built in fuse holder. For mobile installs we supply a shunt coil for impedance matching.

All of our antennas have a 3/8 by 24 Heavy Duty Stainless coupling nut installed at the top of the antenna for the whip or a Cap Hat to be mounted to.

Our antenna body is .065 inch wall 304 Stainless Steel.

We use Acetal or better known as Dupont Delrin for the base of the antenna, the motor support, the ball bearing support, the upper coil cap that supports the whip. This material is extremely expensive, dense and heavy. Our finger stock and coil support housing is polished 6061-T6 Aluminum. It houses the tin plated finger stock and the one inch wide Phenolic coil support. The housing also works as a heat sink during high power operation. Our finger stock is special ordered tin plated beryllium copper and maintains 37 pounds of combined pressure on the coil at all times.

Yes, all steel gears – not plastic!
We use an Industrial grade Pittman quality motor that uses all steel gears in its gear box. We install capacitors on our motors so tuning the antenna by ear is static free. Try this with the Big Coil manufacture...all you will hear is motor noise! We are the only antenna manufacture that uses Two Double Sealed Ball Bearings for our coil support.

We use a polished Stainless 3/8 by16 thread piece of all-thread in conjunction with a 3/4 inch long piece of threaded oil light Bronze that is the nut. This assembly moves the coil in and out of the Stainless tube when rotated by the motor. The polised all-thread is lubricated with very expensive Teflon grease that will withstand -30 to a plus 475 degrees Fahrenheit.

We use a 1/4 inch wall Industrial grade phenolic tube that has a heavy resin base formula that is specially manufactured to our specs. This is our coil form.

Our SA-680 coil is #10 gauge tinned wire wound at 6 threads per inch.
We have wound and tested every size wire at just about every thread pitch you can imagine and testing confirms that #10 gauge wire at 6 TPI on a 3 inch coil always produces the strongest signal!

We use the thickest coil cover in the industry. Our coil cover is made from Lexan, the same material that is used for bullet proof windows on armored trucks. We use .125 inch wall for all of our coil covers .

We are the only manufacture that have built in Counterpoise or Radial connecting bolts at the base of our antennas. This makes the installation of Counterpoise or Radial wires a snap in the backyard, field day or camping .

All of our antennas have a built in reed switch for antenna positioning. We use a two pulse per revolution signal that gives better antenna positioning. Ameritron manufactures two digital display antenna controllers that work really well. One controller has 10 memory presets and the other is a manual controller with just a digital display.

Please remember this antenna weighs 18 pounds and has to have a rigid mount!

1. The Scorpion Quick Mounting Stud is supplied with a Stainless 3/4 inch by 3.5 inch piece of all-thread installed inside it.
The Quick Mounting Stud can be mounted to a bumper or a rigid mounting bracket. We use nothing smaller than 2 inch by 2 inch by 3/16 wall square tube for our installs.

2. A one inch heavy wall threaded pipe "electrical or plumbing" can be screwed into our Stainless One Inch Threaded Pipe Adaptor."see our Accessories".

Our Pipe Adaptor has a 3/4 inch bolt thread on one end and a 1 inch pipe thread on the other.

The Stainless Pipe Adaptor screws onto the 3.5 inch by 3/4 inch piece of all-thread that is located at the bottom of the Quick Mounting Stud, then the heavy wall pipe is screwed into the Stainless Pipe Adaptor. We have customers that use two of the Pipe Adaptors for their install, one at the base of the antenna and one that is either bolted or welded to a plate that is then mounted on their vehicle.
If the nipple is over 6 inches in length it will require a support bracket. Home Depot has pre-cut and pre-threaded heavy wall pipe nipples of various lengths that will work for your install.

Below is a photo of the Scorpion Quick Mount Stud. The Quick Mounting Stud is a 1.4 inch diameter by 4 inch length.
It is CNC precision machined from 6061-T6 Aluminum. The base of the antenna slides over the Quick Mounting Stud for quick removal and installation of the antenna.

Around the base of the antenna are multiple 1/4 inch button head screws that are used for counterpoise wire installation. One of the Button head screws is longer than the rest and is colored red. This stops the antenna from rotating on the Mounting Stud. The recessed area around the bottom on the Mounting Stud is where the longer button head screw will tighten against. It will have screw marks in it so the rest of the close tolorance fit of the Mounting Stud is not damaged.

Make sure the Quick Mounting Stud is always fully installed into the bottom of the antenna before you tighten down the antenna anti-rotation Red button head screw or the Mounting Stud will be damaged!

The Quick Mounting Stud has been machined to accept a 3/4 inch bolt or all-thread. We supply the 3.5 inch piece of all-thread, washer, lock washer and nut for antenna mounting. With the Scorpion Quick Mount Stud, you can move your antenna from your vehicle to your backyard Home Install Package in just minutes. Connect the coax and antenna contol wire and you’re ready to talk to the world.

We use a Craftsman #3 Phillips for tightening the antenna mounts. We think this is one tool that everyone would have in their tool box.
